The deadliest tornado to ever hit Fort Smith occurred on January 11, 1898. It killed around 50 to 55 people and injuring over 100. This making it one of deadliest tornado to ever hit Arkansas. This powerful F4 storm hit near midnight. It leveling homes, businesses, churches and the new high school. The tornado cases major damage throughout much of the city including the downtown area.
