Picture
Raphael Walter Hansard (Lieut.) – was born July 17, 1839, in Bull Run, Knox County, Tennessee, to Samuel H. and Armenia Louisa (Weir) Hansard. In 1846 he moved to Polk County in Missouri and stayed there until the Civil War broke out. He then enlisted in Shelby’s Brigade, Marmaduke’s Division where he served as a Lieutenant of Company C, 3rd Missouri Calvary until the close of the war. During the war his father was killed by the state militia, their home was burned and his sisters were beaten and assaulted. After returning to Verona he moved to Bentonville, Arkansas.

In Bentonville he built a thriving photographic business and in doing so won a lot of friends in the area. It is said he was one of the first photographers west of the Mississippi. He operated in the photography business at least from 1875 to his death. He was also the county coroner from 1880-1882. When Mr. Hansard's health became poor he took on a partner, Mansel Larick, who would eventfully take over the business.  For a while the business was call Hansard & Larick.

He was married to Sarah Katherine (Kate) Fegusson Railey.
Mr. Hansard passed away on April 4, 1894, and is buried in the Odd Fellow Cemetery section of the Bentonville Cemetery. Hansard was honored by 50 members of the Odd Fellows Lodge in proper regalia who were in attendance at his funeral.
