Old High

In 1928 Bentonville started building a new high school, which now known as Old High Middle School. The building is a combination of Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean Styles. The cost of the new school was $110,000. They used materials from the old high school in the building of the new high school, which meant students had no official school to attend in the interim. Classes were held in the Royal Theatre, Christian Church, Methodist Church, Baptist Church, M.E. Church South, and the Nazarene Church. The new school was a smaller version of Central high school in Little Rock.

First through twelfth grades moved into the school in April 1929. Soon after this move was complete the state started to require smaller schools to consolidate with larger school districts, which meant that around this time, Evening Star, Morning Star, Valley View, Summit, Dug Hill, and Miller Mars Hill schools were consolidated into the Bentonville school system. This consolidation was soon followed by Vaughn, Centerton, and Cave Springs as the state mandated. By this time the Bentonville school system was bursting at the seams. With the government’s help, the school was able to add an agricultural building and a gym to the school in the 1940’s.

In 1950 the school district built an elementary school (later named R.E. Baker) on NW Third Street which opened in the fall of 1951. This would solve some of the overcrowding problems for a number of years. From there the district has developed into the school system we have today. The “Old High” building was put on the National Register of Historic places in 1988.
